Diver rings are designed to enhanced the capabilities of a large Luhr Jenson Dipsy Diver® making it capable of going deeper with less line. It accomplishes this by increasing the surface area of the diver and thus forcing more water against when trolled. Under normal conditionals, a Dipsy rig with 300 feet of superbraid line would reach 90-100 feet down whereas a diver ring setup would require 225 feet.
These rings effectively reduce the need to carry wire line rod and reel setups, though wire still remains popular with many anglers. It is more a preference, but these rings help redefine the term - "poor man's downrigger."
